As a
couple of surprisingly good mainstream media op-eds I've read point out,
Germany was a particularly bad choice of NSA target. It's the only
country in the world with an equal and simultaneous history of being
both Western and Soviet bloc. So they have the demands of a
representative democracy AND millions of people with fresh memories of
living under a belligerent surveillance state to shut up
their versions of Mike "It's For Your Safety" Rogers. It's one thing
when rednecks from flyover States in the US compare Obama to Stalin;
it's a whole different ballgame when citizens of crucial foreign allies
start to equate the NSA to the Stasi or KGB. Mark my words, the
surveillance state is doomed, and in my view it can't die fast enough.
