Clearing The Air...

Just to clear the air some after Toxin's recent comments about the Boston mess which caused some controversy. First off I just want to make clear that my sympathies are with the many victims of this incident. Indeed I have been to Boston many times myself and found it, and its people, to be extraordinary. The many tributes offered in the wake of the bombing prove what a strong and resolute place it is. Secondly, it goes without saying that those who put themselves in harm's way every day deserve a lot of credit for taking such a risk to protect the rest of us. My father was a first responder who nearly died in the line of duty so I know what that risk looks like.

Now, I have heard conflicting things about whether or not no-knock raids were conducted during the search and it's becoming more difficult as the issue is being politicized more and more. My opinion on the matter, speaking simply as a citizen, is that we as a society need to be careful about giving law enforcement agencies, any of them, too much unchecked power. Some of my earlier comments were not based solely on Boston, but were rather meant to demonstrate that the militarization of the police and the general erosion of civil liberties post-9/11 has been concerning, and there seems to be a sentiment amongst many Americans that trading away certain freedoms for what we're told is extra security that concerns me also. We need to remember that policymakers make mistakes too, and no agency should be above reproach. Anyone from Boston who needs to know what insane police overreach in pursuing one nut with a gun looks like, Google "Christopher Dorner" and see what we're talking about. None of this is meant to say that I am not glad the bomber was caught. Now the debate over how to treat/classify him can begin. --Joe
